Private Schools' Classrooms To Accommodate Junior Secondary Schools

On Tuesday, June 7, George Magoha, the Education Cabinet Secretary acknowledged that the administration was hurrying to implement the next phase of the CBC.

The availability of classes and accommodation for students transitioning to Junior Secondary School in 2023 is a serious concern.

Secondary schools will need roughly 30,000 classrooms and other infrastructure to accommodate the 1.4 million students who will begin taking the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in the junior secondary in January of next year.

According to official figures, the CBC and 8-4-4 learners' combined enrollment will result in a shortfall of 1,489,144 secondary school spots.

With a proposed class size of 45 to 50 kids, this would require 29,783 additional classrooms, far exceeding the 10,000 that the government has set aside for completion by the end of next month.

According to Education CS, the government is also relying on private schools to supplement their efforts by constructing 5,000 additional classrooms.

Only 1,200 classes have been completed by private schools so far. Private school classrooms are being inspected for conformity with health and safety regulations and readiness to handle Junior Secondary classes.

Prof Magoha downplayed concerns about preparation, insisting that there will be no crisis and that whatever administration wins the August General Election will continue to improve secondary school facilities.

Although it has struggled to produce the 6,497 classrooms in Phase I that it had been expected to finish before the start of national examinations in March, the Ministry of Education will roll out the second phase of CBC classrooms at the end of this week.

Magoha will classify schools as national, extra-county, county, or sub-county in January 2023.
