What is a gastric balloon procedure?

A gastric balloon, also known as an intragastric balloon or belly balloon, is a soft balloon that is inserted into your stomach non-surgically through your mouth using an endoscope.

It is an endoscopic treatment for obesity that, when combined with a healthy diet and physical activity, aids in weight loss.

If your body mass index (BMI) is 29 or higher, you should consider the gastric balloon as a weight loss option.

How is the gastric balloon procedure done?

A soft silicone balloon is delivered into the stomach in a deflated state via an endoscope and inflated by filling it with saline solution. The balloon partially fills your stomach, making it less space for larger amounts of food and/or drink.

The gastric balloon is intended to be placed temporarily and removed after six months. After six months, the balloon is removed, and patients continue to live healthy lifestyles.

The procedure serves as a tool to aid in the development of better weight loss strategies and to reinforce portion control. The gastric balloon creates a sense of early and prolonged fullness after and between meals.
