Man Who Shared Alchemist Racism Video Withdraws Claims And Apologizes

Emmanuel Murgor, the man who allegedly recorded the alleged racist incident at Nairobi's Westlands' Alchemist Bar has apologized for misleading the public.

The two parties met on Friday, June 3 and the complainant accepted that he misled the public, according to a statement he signed and made public by the Alchemist Bar.

Murgor's lawyer signed a statement expressing regret for the consequences of his viral video, which included the closure of the restaurant, whose license was suspended by Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu, and the arrest of ten of the bar's staff.

Murgor claims that what was shown in the video was never the case, claiming that the club is diverse and does not accept racism.

"After reviewing the full footage of the evening and even from my experience inside, I can attest that The Alchemist embraces diversity. I also reiterate that from how the club's management has handled the incident, they are open to diversity and have, in fact, zero tolerance towards racism,” he wrote in a statement shared by the bar.

Murgor expressed his "deep regret" for whatever narrative that his clip may have sparked, claiming that this was not his purpose.

He also praised the club's professionalism, as well as the diversity and inclusivity on the show on May 20.

“The club strives to be the most diverse club in Kenya and is, in fact, the most racially diverse club in Kenya,” he said.

The individual expressed he was sorry that his actions caused the Nairobi County administration to close the site indefinitely, resulting in job losses.

“I urge The Alchemist to have their staff affected by the incident retain their jobs. I also urge the public to stop their attacks and threats against the Alchemist on social media.”

Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu suspended the club's trading license on May 31 and appointed a multi-agency team to investigate the allegations of racism.

Following public outcry, ten officials from the club were detained.

Murgor alleged in a social media post that club administrators had set up separate lines for black and white patrons.

He shared a video illustrating a scenario in which a black man was requested to leave a white-only queue.
