Man Charged For Joking About Buying Human Toes, Zimbabwe

A Zimbabwean man has been charged by his country's court for saying that he was part of a gang that bought human toes for up to $78,000 (Ksh.912,8340.00)

David Kaseke, the 40year old cellphone salesman in Harare was charged with criminal nuisance before Harare magistrate Meenal Narotam on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said the individual was approached by a popular tabloid at his office in central Harare on May 27 at around 4 p.m. and told the journalists that he was part of a gang that was buying human toes for ritual purposes.

In the video, Kaseke claimed to be part of a network that bought human toes for between $26,000 and $78,000. He estimated that the small toe would sell for $25,000 to $30,000, while the huge toe would cost $75,000.

The tabloid's video went viral on social media, and when Kaseke was arrested, he claimed that he made the joke while intoxicated.

Prosecutors said his joke "materially interfered with the comfort, convenience, and peace of the public since he wantonly and mischievously raised [a] false alarm."

Some Zimbabweans claimed to have purchased expensive cars after selling their toes in videos posted on social media.

Claims that some Zimbabweans had resorted to selling their toes for survival went viral on social media a week ago, prompting a top government official to denounce the jokes as an attempt to tarnish the country's image.

The government took the allegations of people selling their toes so seriously that information minister Kindness Paradza had to go to a mall in central Harare to investigate.

The magistrate has yet to make a decision in the case.
