Nairobi commuters who use the Waiyaki way were left stranded on Monday morning, 28th June after the Matatu touts tripled fare.

The passengers were on Monday Morning forced to pay Sh 200 to 300 instead of the usual 50 to 100

This follows the construction of the Nairobi Expressway and expansion of the Waiyaki way that usually causes traffic of up to 2 hours daily.

On Monday morning, 28th June 2021, a section of Waiyaki was connecting to Forest Road was closed till 1, August 2021; one month closure.

The Kenya National Railway Authority on Saturday 26th informed the public of the closure to enhance the construction of the expressway. 

The Scalpers stressed that the weather also promoted the delay that morning which according to the passengers, the touts themselves caused the delay intentionally.

The touts also did not accept the Mpesa mode of payment.

"Those paying via mobile money should alight, or top up the withdrawal fee," a tout directed.

Several Nairobians walked on foot, especially from Kangemi to Westlands and beyond due to the gridlock around the ABC roundabout.
