Tips for making hamburgers patties

To make the best-tasting burgers, you need to focus on two things: the quality of the meat and its fat content.

When selecting meat for your burgers, opt for ground chuck instead of ground beef because it has a better flavor. Additionally, choose meat that has more fat content, as lean beef can result in a dry burger, particularly if you prefer a well-done patty.

When making hamburgers, you have the option to shape them according to your preference, whether thick or thin.

Thick patties will take longer to cook, but they are less likely to overcook, which is perfect for those who like their burgers medium-rare.

If you prefer thick burgers, it is crucial to use the back of a spoon to create an indentation in the center of each patty. This will help prevent the center of the patty from puffing up as they cook.

Thinner patties, on the other hand, should be flipped and moved as little as possible during cooking as they can easily overcook.

To enhance the flavor of your homemade burgers, you can customize them with your favorite fresh toppings and condiments.

Homemade Hamburger Toppings

Remember, the choice of toppings for your burger is subjective, and you can use whatever you prefer. Here are some suggested toppings that you can include when making your homemade burgers.

  • Cheese - cheddar cheese, feta cheese, etc.

  • Mayo
  • BBQ sauce
  • Garlic Aioli
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Pickles or pickle relish
  • Caramelized Onions
  • Fried egg
  • Sauteed Mushrooms

Ingredients

Hamburger Patty Ingredients

1 kg ground beef

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1 large egg

2 tablespoon milk

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon paprika

1½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Assembly and Toppings

6 toasted sesame seed buns

6 slices of cheese

Lettuce

Tomatoes

Pickles

Red onion

Mayonnaise

Procedure

In a large mixing bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until the ingredients are well-combined. Avoid over-mixing, or the patties will become tough.

Divide the mixture into six equal parts and form each into a ball shape. Place them aside.

Set a large skillet over medium-high heat. Gently press one ball onto the skillet and create a patty that is half an inch thick with a flat spatula.

With a spoon, make a small indentation in the center of each patty as they will expand during cooking, especially for larger, thicker burgers.

If you prefer medium-rare, cook each side of the patties for 3-4 minutes. For well-done, cook for a longer period.

If you're adding cheese, put a slice on each patty. Then, lower the heat to low, and cover the pan with a lid to enable the cheese to melt entirely.

After the patties are cooked and the cheese is melted, remove them from the skillet and place them on a plate to rest.

When grilling;

To grill the burgers, preheat the grill to around 375 degrees F, at medium-high heat.

Using your hands, shape each ball into a patty, making them ½-¾ inch thick, and use the back of a spoon to create a small indentation in the center of each patty. Place the burgers on the grill and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side. You can add cheese if you prefer.

Once the burgers are cooked, take them off the grill and rest them on a plate.

Assembling the burger

To put together your burger, spread mayonnaise over both the top and bottom buns. Place a patty on the bottom bun and add lettuce, tomato, pickles, and red onion as desired.
