Kirinyaga IEBC Returning Officer Geoffrey Gitobu Dies

Geoffrey Gitobu, who was an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) returning officer for the Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County during the concluded election has passed away.

Gitobu died on Monday, August 22 after collapsing outside the IEBC offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.

According to John Tarus, the head of Laikipia East police, Gitobu's death was reported by his brother on Monday afternoon.

“A brother of the deceased made a report at the police station on Monday afternoon. The report indicated that Gitobu was driving within Nanyuki town when he felt dizzy and was rushed to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Tarus.

Gitobu had taken three days’ leave from his job in Kirinyaga County at the time of his death to visit his relatives in Nanyuki, Laikipia County and was expected back on August 23.

Gitobu went to the IEBC headquarters in Nanyuki on Monday to print some paperwork when he suddenly became ill. He was sent to the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital but was declared dead when he arrived.

Gitobu was a well-known businessman in Nanyuki town who owned a number of commercial structures.

The officer's demise was confirmed by Jane Gitonga, Kirinyaga County returning officer.

"It is with profound sadness that I announce the sudden demise of our dear colleague and friend, Mr Geoffrey Gitobu, senior election officer in Gichugu Constituency, who collapsed and died today (Monday) at 2pm. Post-mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death," said Ms Gitonga.
