According to detectives, the tanker's driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle before it went off the road and overturned at around 1 am in morning.

The early Saturday morning accident made locals race to siphon petrol from the tanker but police at the scene managed to disperse them.

The locals had arrived at the scene of the accident with jerry cans ready to take petrol from the tanker.

The event happened about a kilometer from the spot where an LPG tanker caught fire in February 2022 while being lifted in the Mutarakwa neighborhood.

The February accident led to the injury of seven people and destroyed seven vehicles. However, police arrived quickly to take control of the situation and avert any further danger.

On January 31, 2009, a tanker explosion at Sachangwan on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway resulted in at least 130 deaths.

On September 12, 2011, 120 people were burned to death while attempting to siphon oil from a pipeline in the Sinai slums of Nairobi. The incident sent at least 100 more people to the hospital.

On the Eldoret-Webuye highway in 2018, a fuel truck collided with a matatu, resulting in the death of twelve people.

The police cautioned citizens against stealing petrol from overturned fuel tankers, saying that doing so could put them in danger or even put their lives in danger.
