Speaking during a consultative meeting with the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK), the CS said that multi-agency security teams had already mapped out potential flashpoints in regions where the nominations are expected to be hotly contested and police and other security teams had been deployed.

Party primaries are expected to start in two weeks’ time and the CS has insisted that the process must be concluded by the 24th of April this year which is in accordance with guidelines by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission (IEBC).

We have our plans for ensuring the nominations, like any other election-related activity, are conducted in an environment of peace. We are continuously assessing the levels of vulnerability to security challenges during this season and adjusting our strategies accordingly, The CS said.

Inclusive debate on election laws and campaign financing rules, which should have regulated spending by politicians, is also encouraging violent conflicts on sharing of bribery money among mobilized crowds,” he added.

IRCK Chair Father Joseph Mutie on his part called on the State’s security preparedness for the August polls especially its plan against ethnic mobilization that is undermining cohesion, security and peace.

Addressing the issue of curfew imposed in parts of Garissa County, the CS said that the measures will be reviewed ahead of the Ramadhan period in order to restore calm.

His assurance comes barely after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party announced plans of stopping party primaries in Nakuru county citing Fears of vioelence.
