Officers from the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) and their counterparts from the Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS) led the search for the bodies.

After a two-day search that included fishermen from Chamaunga and Nyangina beaches, the bodies were discovered on Monday in the late afternoon.

Chairman of the Nyangina Beach Management Unit Joseph Kaseu claimed that the bodies were adrift in the water.

"Rescuers had to pull them out of the water into their boats and transport them to the beach. They were then taken to the mortuary," he said.

Four fishermen in a small boat were fishing right in front of a ferry but they failed to get out of the way of the ferry leading to a crash that damaged the wooden boat.

Two of the fishermen died after being thrown overboard into the water ahile the other two managed to swim to safety and were saved by other fishermen.

According to Mbita Sub-County Police Commander Stanley Atavachi, marine police are looking into the event and will determine the precise cause of the crash.

In Lake Victoria, collisions between watercraft are quite uncommon.

Fishermen and other vessel operators have been keen on safety since the introduction of agencies like the KMA, KCGS, and others on the lake last year in order to avoid imprisonment.

The most recent incident, however, has highlighted the need for greater civic education on water safety.
