Prengei, who was nominated to represent the youth and minorities in the Senate, was involved in an accident in the Giotto area on the outskirts of Nakuru town.

According to the area boss, the senator was rushed to a hospital in Nakuru for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police boss Kiraguri said that the lawmaker was driving towards Kabarak from Nakuru town when the accident occurred.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui announced that the accident happened at around 9.45 pm as Prengei was driving towards Kabarak. His body has since been moved to War Memorial Hospital mortuary.

"He was a quiet and humble leader, always conscious of the huge burden he carried."

"To the family and the people of Marioshoni, our hearts and prayers during these difficult times," Kinyanjui stated.

He added: “His elevation to the Senate was a major recognition of the rights of the Ogiek and other minority communities.

The late Senator hailed from the minority Ogiek community and in 2017 made history when he became the first member of his community to serve in Parliament.

Gilgil MP Martha Wangari was among the first leaders to mourn the youthful legislator.

"This life Nakuru and the country mourns the loss of nominated Senator Victor Prengei following a road accident this evening," Wangari said.
