Moi University Shut Down Indefinitely Following Lectures Strike

In a letter dated Wednesday 27th to all the students, the campus Senate had suspended teaching and learning activities at the main campus indefinitely due to the industrial action by the University staff which had affected the institution’s activities.

The students were then directed to vacate the hostels and leave the university premises by 12:00 Noon on Thursday 28th October.

A letter from Moi University's Main Campus.

This comes barely three days after the lecturers took to the streets on Monday 25th to protest over unpaid salaries.

According to one unionist, the teaching staff had not been paid for the last three months while the school's farm workers were yet to receive their 13 months salary.

"We are here today because we want to get justice. As it is, the donkey is tired enough is enough," one of the unionists stated.

The lecturers demanded that the government pay attention to their issues or they would not return to class.

The tutors wanted an audience with University Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey, claiming that he owed them an explanation for why they had not been paid.

On the other hand, they requested that the University's leadership be removed with immediate effect.

The police were later compelled to intervene to get the situation under control.
