Vihiga County Commander Benjamin Ong'ombe confirmed the occurrence saying that no deaths had been reported yet at the time of the incident.

"Yes it is true there is an accident involving many vehicles. I'm yet to establish the number. I have asked the OCPD and the police on the ground to do that," said Ong'ombe.

Ong’ombe said that the trailer struck the cars that were parked for inspection because its brakes failed as it approached the roadblock.

The county commander instructed the police to respond quickly to the scene to investigate the situation under the direction of the sub-county commander.

The collision resulted in a significant traffic jam along the major route as crowds engaged police in running altercations over the construction of the roadblock that they alleged was the cause of the disaster.

The injured were taken to Vihiga County Referral hospital as police in anti-riot gear arrived at the scene to maintain order.

According to doctor Vitalis Juma, acting medical superintendent at Vihiga County Referral Hospital, the hospital received a number of casualties.

The injured were receiving medical care and the majority of them were in stable condition.

“I will be able to ascertain the exact number of casualties we have received later. We are currently attending to them,” said the doctor.
