According to a statement released on Tuesday evening, the Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate John Katuku agreed to step down after a consultative meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This comes after a virtual meeting which was attended by KAMU, ODM, Ford Kenya, ANC, Narc, and Wiper Party leaders where Mutua said the President urged them to unite the region by finding peace on the way forward of the Thursday by-elections.

Maendeleo Chap Chap party will now support Wiper’s candidate Anne Kavindu to ensure the UDA party which is linked to Deputy President William Ruto does not clinch the seat.

Wiper candidate Anne Kavindu is ex-wife to UDA Chairman Johnson Muthama who also enjoys the support of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Kavindu was a member of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) steering Committee which came up with the BBI Bill a product of a handshake between President Uhuru and Raila Odinga.

“As MCC party that supports the handshake and the Building Bridges Initiative, we believe that:

1) Unity is essential to fast-track development and alleviates poverty. 2) We have to end the culture of divisive and winner takes it all politics,” said Mutua.

The statement also read, “Maendeleo Chap Chap Party supported the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and in the spirit of consistency, we support his development agenda & the political stability of the Nation.”
