Espanyol hand Real Madrid second loss of the week in famous win
Espanyol Forward Raul de Tomas celebrates opening goal against Real Madrid in their evening La Liga clash.

Real Madrids' week went from bad to worse as an astounding Espanyol side scooped maximum points by recording a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in only their second win since promotion to top-flight at the RCDE stadium.

The visitor's were first to thwart the goal twice in succession courtesy of Madrid talisman Karim Benzema but Espanyols' defence kept their cool and remained compact.

'Periquitos' drew first blood when Raul de Tomas got on the end of a beautiful team effort and tapped it in giving the home team the lead.

Unvexed by trailing, 'Los Blancos' strived to maintain their dominance but the final piece of the puzzle is what eluded them as Vincente Morenos men went toe-to-toe with the well structured Madrid midfield. Carlo Ancelottis men desperately looked for a leveller but Espanyol held them off.

Espanyol doubled the lead in the 60th min as Aleix Vidal left Madrid fullback Nacho for dead as he wrapped up his emphatic solo run with a crucial finish.

Ancelotti strived to make amends and they paid off almost immediately as Karim Benzema pulled one back for the visitor's with a superb strike from the inside right post.

Madrid hustled for a second but Espanyol held off their nerves to ensure a famous win over the Madrid faithful. Espanyol victory means that they are now  thirteenth in the table with nine points and have halted Madrids run of 105 wins against them for the time being. 'Los Blancos' on the other hand remain at the top of the table with goal difference being what separates them from their city rival's Atletico. Ancelotti will be seeking to correct his team's poor performances as Madrid have gone three games without a win.
