The new Chief Justice was awarded the instruments of power during the ceremony.

Judiciary chief registrar Anne Amadi reminded Koome that she is inheriting an institution that is grossly underfunded.

The Chief registrar, however, noted that some progress has been made with the Executive in relation to funding, acknowledging the presence of house speakers at the event of the assumption of office of the CJ.

Koome vowed to protect the independence of the Judiciary during her maiden speech at the Supreme Court last Friday during her swearing-in ceremony.

"I have no difficulties to state that the independence of the Judiciary cannot be interfered with. Our decision making, hiring of staff is protected in the Constitution. Any party trying to direct how the Judiciary should decide a matter would be interfering with the Constitution."

Present at the assumption of office event was the first female magistrate Effie Owuor, AG Kihara Kariuki, DPP Noordin Haji, and LSK president Nelson Havi.
