Health CAS Mercy Mwang'ang'i announced on Friday, March 19 that 1,354 people tested positive for COVID-19 out of a sample size of 7,732 tested in the last 24 hours. 

The national tally of positive cases now stands at 118,889.

At the same time, the CAS announced that 28 patients succumbed to the disease during the same period, pushing the cumulative fatality to 1,982.

It is the highest recorded single-day death count since the first COVID-19 case was reported in the country on March 13, 2020.

Of the newly reported cases, 1,301 are Kenyans while 53 are foreigners. 635 are female while 719 are female.

The youngest is a seven-month-old baby while the oldest is aged 100.

Nairobi led with 717 cases followed by Nakuru with 174.

185 patients have recovered from the disease, 136 from home-based care isolation whereas 49 from various health facilities. The total recoveries stand at 89,388.

One of the positive cases confirmed in the last 24 hours is Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi.

The county's Deputy Governor confirmed the news while adding that the governor is okay and in isolation as advised by his doctors.

"We thank God because he is quite okay, he is doing quite well. He has been advised by the doctors to do self-isolation and he will be back after few days," said Meru deputy governor Titus Ntuchiu.
