Police Storm Inooro TV Studios and Arrest a Woman Impersonating a Police Officer

The police officers at the Kilimani police station received information today about an ongoing interview on Inooro Television in which they were hosting an alleged uniformed female police officer as one of their panelists.

The station had invited Monica Wamaitha Gitau, who is running for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat, to discuss issues affecting the city and how she would address them if elected.

Doubting the credibility of the interviewee at the time, the police officers rushed to the television station and arrested Monica Wamaitha Gitau, a civilian and aspirant for the Nairobi Women Representative seat, who was dressed in full police uniform.

The woman was apprehended by police officers and is currently in their custody at Kilimani police station, assisting them with investigations into impersonating a police officer.

Following the incident, the police department requested that media outlets confirm the authenticity of the panelists.

"To avoid similar incidences in the future, National Police Service wishes to advise all media houses to always liaise for clearance with the Office of the Police Spokesperson or respective regional or county commanders over all requests for interviews with police officers," NPS stated.

In the Kenya, impersonating a police officer is a crime. It is punishable by a fine of up to Ksh1 million or even ten years in prison.

According to the law "Impersonating a police officer contrary to Section 101(b) of the National Police Service Act Cap. 84, Laws of Kenya, carries a sentence of a fine not exceeding Ksh1 million shillings or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years or both."
