Ahenda had previously served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kabondo Kasipul from 2005 to 2007, following the death of his predecessor Peter Owidi.

Following a thorough vetting process in Parliament, President Uhuru Kenyatta named Ahenda as the head of the High Commission in Qatar in October 2018.

When he went before the panel in August 2018, there were various questions about his qualifications, with some saying that he lacked the necessary academic credentials.

The politician, on the other hand, claimed at the time that he had extensive experience as a sales manager and was well prepared to fulfill the office's responsibilities.

His nomination became a topic of dispute after allegations surfaced that Qatar had rejected the envoy, which Doha denied.

“The Embassy requests that the respected newspaper and all the other online news platform that carried the above mentioned unverified news, to carry out their due diligence and to confirm their stories before publishing,” responded the embassy at the time.
