The incident occurred in the Shehu Shagari School in Sokoto, Nigeria, prompting immediate closure of the school.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state ordered the school to be closed and directed the Ministry of Higher Education and security forces to examine the incident.

According to a police statement, the student, Deborah, was encircled by classmates and attacked on Thursday

"Students forcefully removed the victim from the security room where she was hidden by the school authorities, killed her and burnt the building," police spokesperson Sanusi Abubakar said in a statement.

Her assailants appear to be holding a matchbox and gloating after setting her on fire, according to a video that went viral following the killing.

"The culprits in the viral video on Twitter were recognized and will be nailed soon," Abubakar said, adding that two people had been apprehended.

Nigerians have taken to twitter to express their outrage and condemn the death. There are fears that it may exacerbate sectarian tensions in the country, which is divided religiously, with the north primarily Muslim and the south predominantly Christian.

In Nigeria, mobs have previously attacked persons for supposed blasphemy. One of the most significant instances was during the 2002 Miss World pageant, which was originally scheduled to take place in Nigeria but was shifted owing to violent demonstrations in which 100 people were killed.
