On Friday, April 8, NCIC chairperson Rev. Samuel Kobia noted that the vocabulary phrases singled out by the Commission tend to incite violence among various communities when employed.

The words listed are in a range of dialects, including English, Swahili, Sheng, and a number of other regional languages.

The phrases fumigation, eradicate, and kill are prohibited in English.

The Kiswahili words include Kaffir, Madoa doa, Chunga Kura, Kama noma noma , Kwekwe, Mende, Hatupangwingwi, Operation Linda kura, Watu wa kurusha mawe, Watajua hawajui  and Wabara waende kwa.

In Kikuyu, the words flagged include Kihii (uncircumcised man), Uthamaki ni witu (the Kingdom is ours), and Mwiji in Kimeru.

NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia said that the words have the ability to incite violence between ethnic groups in the country.

We have therefore taken the bull by its horns through this exercise of identifying terms and coded language that have been commonly used in Kenya’s political landscape with the intent to incite violence against various communities of differing political stances,” read the statement by NCIC.

As such, this remains a living document since the terms and coded language shall be regularly updated for use in the social media tracking of the National cohesion and Integration Commission,” added Kobia.

According to the commission, anyone found guilty of using the words will be listed on NCIC’s wall of shame ahead of the polls.

The terms shall also be shared continually with the public in order to enhance their readiness and resilience against manipulation and polarization by political leaders and other influential persons intent is to incite communities against others,” Kobia stated.
