Ng'ondi is the sole candidate for Speaker of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Between 2013 and 2017, he was deputy speaker under the late Alex Ole Magelo.

"I have expressed my interest to be the next Speaker of Nairobi County Assembly based on the experience I have, having worked as the Deputy Speaker," Ng'ondi stated.

The former legislator also served as ward representative for Kware Ward in the Embakasi South constituency and chaired the county assembly's Health committee.

"What I bring to the table is a wealth of experience. I have been a councilor, chairman of the Public Health Committee, and deputy speaker. I served both roles for five years," Ng'ondi stated.

Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate for the Azimio la Umoja One Coalition, announced in April 2022 that Nairobi's speaker position would be given to the ODM party.

His bid, however, raises the prospect of a tussle within Azimio for the speaker's post, as the Jubilee party announced Harrison Wangoro as its candidate on Friday.

Wangoro ran for Embakasi North parliamentary seat on a Jubilee ticket but was defeated by a UDA candidate.

UDA is also expected to put forward a candidate for speaker. Out of the city's 85 wards, UDA secured 36 seats in the Nairobi Assembly and ODM 35.
