Government To Lift The Lamu Curfew

On Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i announced that peace had returned to the affected areas; therefore, the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on January 5 in Lamu County will be lifted.

Government To Lift The Lamu Curfew

“The government has invested enough resources in Lamu, and we are intending to lift the curfew after a review of the situation. On Thursday, we will be meeting county commissioners before we give a final announcement,” the CS noted.

The decision was taken when locals cooperated with the security personnel, resulting in increased security, the CS stated after touring the security vessel MV Doria at the Kenya Coast Guard Service offices.

The National Security Council (NSC) declared some parts of Lamu County problematic zones in January and imposed a 30-day dusk-to-dawn curfew. But because of further terrorist incidents, it was prolonged.

The lifting of the curfew will come as a massive relief to locals, most of whom are Muslims, whose activities have been hampered, particularly now that Ramadhan is approaching.

Muslims break their fast at nightfall, which coincides with curfew time, and locals have begged the administration to abolish the curfew.

After an evaluation by the security team, Dr Matiang'i announced the curfew would be removed in regions that have been labelled disturbed.
