Chiefs nearly pulled off the most incredible comeback in the Super Rugby Trans-Tasman clash against the Reds who ultimately withheld the pressure to settle for a tensed 40-34 win in Townsville.

The Australian side snapped a two-match losing streak with a massive victory making it their first win in the competition in three weeks.


The home side took control from the first minute and their efforts rewarded with a penalty try in the 16th minute from a deliberate knock-down by Chief’s winger Chase Tiatia to deny an obvious try who was then shown a yellow card.


The Chiefs managed to pull back a three point from a penalty through fly-half Damian McKenzie only to make the host hungrier for more dominance to deny the visitors any other points in the first half.


The Reds made use of their extra man advantage and mnaged to score their second try in he 22nd minutes from a superb run from center Isaac Henry through the defense from scrauhalf’s Tate McDermtt flat pass.


Everything seemed to be against the Kiwi side as fly-half Mckanzie was shown a red card for head-high tackle on McDermott and without hesitace, the host pounded on the already wounded side with swift try from winger Suliasi Vunivalu to make the third try of the game.


It became a joy ride game for the host evident from the half-hour mark try from prop Feao Fotuika who bullied his way over the line before a second try from center Henry to extend their lead to 33-3 three minutes before halftime.


The Kiwi side began their second half campaign with a high note and managed to score their first try in the 52nd minutes through flnak Pita-Gus from a long build-up play but the Aussie side quickly responded five  minutes later through left-wing Filipo Dauunu to take the scores to 40-8.


With 15 minutes remaining, there was nothing to lose for the New Zealand side through an attempted miraculous comeback through lock Topou Vaa’I, replaced prop Reuben O’Neil, wing Bailyn Sullivan and reserve halfback Xavier Roe with three successful conversions to take the game to a 40-34 score that was decided by time.
