KEMSA’s New Scandal

According to reports by the global fund, KEMSA has been accused that over 1.1 million condoms, tuberculosis drugs worth Ksh.10 million and 908,000mosquito nets have gone missing.

The global fund is an organization based in Switzerland and its function is to help fund governments control the effects of HIV/AIDS, Malaria and tuberculosis in the world.

Kemsa has poor internal controls on warehousing and inventory management, resulting in 16 percent differences in batch numbers verified, and discrepancies of 908,000 long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) between actual and expected stock balances,” read a statement by the Global fund.

Global fund also added more claims concerning deceitful suppliers seeking funds from Kemsa worth sh. 1.66.

“We identified 165 long outstanding/undelivered local purchase orders (LPOs) valued at $14.5 million (Sh1.66 billion). The high number of LPOs without attached delivery notes poses the risk of fake suppliers or diverted procurements,” the statement added .

The international organization now wants investigations to be made on KEMSA to determine what happened at the KEMSA’s warehouse.

The new scandal put KEMSA in the limelight a year after a major scandal was announced at the authority. The scandal involved corruption allegations against purchase of Covid-19 equipment and the case is still under investigations with the real culprits not yet brought to book.
