How to start a blog

Find your topic

What do you enjoy? Write about what you enjoy. You don’t have to have extensive knowledge on the topic, all you just need is the passion to learn about it as most of what you will learn will come from experience.

You can choose from a wide range of topics such as photography, fashion, art, politics, even your own experiences.

Pick a domain

It should mainly correspond to the name of your blog. Once you do so, you'll need to provide your email address, a username, and a password and, if you’re not ready to select a custom domain name or a plan, you can always do those parts later by selecting the free WordPress.com subdomain and the free site option.

However, if you find that your favoured domain has been taken you can use the following ways;

  1. Try a different domain extension. like '.net' in case.com is taken.
  2. Add small words.“a”.
  3. Add dashes between words.
  4. Try to use broad keywords- Top-level topics like “cooking” are great, but you need to connect the big ideas to narrower topics.
  5. Avoid numbers and hyphens. These confuse people, and it makes it hard to explain the domain to others.

Find a Web Host

A web host allows the blog to be accessed through the internet by other users using the search engine. Without a domain and web hosting, your blog will not be seen online and if users don't see your blog, you won't get page views.

There are a lot of different web hosting companies out there, however, you need to find one that is reliable, safe, and has a good reputation. On WordPress, though this has already been optimized.

Another catch is that you do not need to spend anything to start a blog. Most blogging websites have a free plan meaning you can get started right away as you amass enough money to begin paying for other plans that monetize your blog.
