Preliminary investigations indicate that Al Shabaab terrorists who had earlier been sighted by locals in the area were behind the attack.

The suspected militia group opened fire on the joint patrol security team while they were out on routine patrol.

The joint team consisted of general duty officers, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Border Patrol Unit, the Anti-Stock Theft Unit, the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit, and the general patrol officers.

“The team which was on patrol was led by the Sub-County Police Commander for Mandera central was sprayed with bullets by suspected al-Shabaab militias. Five officers were injured during the attack,” read the police report.

With the assistance of KDF and GSU officers, they were able to repel the attackers in a quick response.

Police reported that the police vehicles involved were a land cruiser and a lorry which were partially damaged in the incident.

The five victims received medical care at the Elwak sub-county referral hospital and were all released later in fair condition.

Additionally, a manhunt has been started to find the terrorists who, according to intelligence reports, entered the nation across the open Kenya-Somalia border.
