More youths from Uasin Gishu are set to benefit from internship opportunities across various businesses in the country after the county government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI).

According to the Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, the MoU will see graduates get internship opportunities at businesses that are members of KNCCI so that they (the youths) can acquire practical industry skills in a real-life business environment.

“We won’t struggle with limited opportunities at government facilities anymore with this agreement. We’re pleased for the support and want to assure that as county, we shall continue to create enabling business environment for members to do business and help the economy grow,” Mandago said.

He also expressed optimism that some of the youths who will get the internship will end up securing permanent jobs in the areas they will have been placed.

The MoU enhances the county’s initiative under which it places youths for a paid internship at various organizations.

Under the initiative, the county pays the interns while its partners absorb the youths to get skills.

A graduate who gets an internship under this initiative is paid Ksh13,500 monthly for a year to cater for his/her upkeep while Diploma holders are paid Ksh11,500 per month.

Speaking after signing the MoU, KNCCI president Richard Ngatia said the move is part of a resolution they had with the Council of Governors to support Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs).

“One of the important aspects for business growth is the youth who will now get the support and as an organization through the partnership and membership, we believe a continuation of this initiative shall be able to accommodate students from the university and technical institutions,” Ngatia said.

He said they are hoping to expand the program across the country with a target of benefiting up to 300,000 youths who will be able to get internships.
