UoN Students Warn To Protest Against The 7 Times Increased Accommodation Charges

The University of Nairobi Students have warned to start the protests on Monday (today) when first-year students report, in an effort to force the administration to withdraw the increment.

The strike alert is a result of the increased accommodation fees by up to seven times per semester, a move that has accumulated pressure on students already punched with an unexpected rise in tuition fees.

Students in their third and final years in single rooms will pay Sh21,525 per semester up from the previous Sh3,150 as those in rooms shared by four will pay Sh15,120, up from Sh2,730.

First-year students joining the University will pay Sh19,635 for a room shared by two students per semester from the earlier Sh2,835 that the University has been charging at its main campus.

The new accommodation fees for the fresh students come few weeks after the university more than doubled the fees for postgraduate courses and parallel degrees.

University had doubled the fees claiming the move is to ease a cash crunch that has seen its default on the payment of statutory deductions.
