Through its Vice Chancellor, the institution announced  that the deregistered students include those who had temporarily withdrawn from the studies, those on suspension and those that had deferred.

Speaking to Business Daily, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Stephen Kiama, said that the decision was arrived at after a the school's senate commitee meeting that was conducted last year.

“We started that exercise mid last year and we took through Senate the names of those who have over-stayed, those who are not active and by the time we were closing the year in December, we had expunged slightly above 30,000,” Kiama said.

The vice chancellor further said that the process was done so as to pave way for new students who would like to join the institution.

“Some students register, do one course, then disappear but do not say where they have gone. We are combing through the system because we need to plan for the active students,” said the Vice Chancellor.

The announcement comes at a time when most students have taken academic breaks because of inability to pay school fees due to hard economic problems among other issues.

Kiama however said that the university would provide an opportunity for those students who were willing to make a commitment to enroll back into the system.

It is deliberate and we said we have to remove you and then you have to make a commitment that you will follow through our program so that we can keep you here," Kiama added.
