Ugandan Politician, Kizza Besigye ,Arrested Amid Protests Over High Cost Of Living
Ugandan political leader and former presidential aspirant Kizza Besigye has been arrested after attempting to leave his Kasangati residence in Wakiso county,

Besigye, the chairman of the People's Front for Transition (PFT), was detained in a police arrest vehicle as he sought to return to Kasangati town to resume his rallies against high commodities prices, according to a Ugandan news site, Monitor.
"I will not accept to be kept in my house like I am a prisoner in my own country. This must stop," Besigye was quoted saying.
Although he has recently been vocal in his criticism of Uganda's government's failure to cushion its population in the wake of soaring costs of key necessities, no explanation was offered for his arrest.
His detention came only hours after President Yoweri Museveni ruled out tax cuts to help people cope with rising living costs.
President Yoweri Museveni stated in a televised address on Sunday that the only way to reduce inflation in Uganda is to eliminate imported goods and replace them with locally available alternatives.
The president said that providing subsidies or tax exemptions to Ugandans as a method of cushioning them against growing prices of most items would be "suicidal" for the economy.
“It is not true that we tax everything. The very crucial items, are not taxed. Therefore, removing taxes or subsidizing many of the imports is suicidal and a blunder,” the 77-year-old president said.
In response, Besigye stated that Museveni had failed to lead by example, and promised to continue his protest.
