Tanzania’s opposition side now wants Vice President Suluhu Hassan sworn in immediately following the demise of President Magufuli to avoid a constitutional vacuum.

Vice President Suluhu Hassan announced on late Wednesday that President Magufuli had succumbed to heart disease which had plagued him for a decade. However, Suluhu did not indicate when she will be sworn in as the Tanzanian President.

According to opposition leader Zitto Kabwe, The VP has to be sworn in immediately.

“The constitution doesn’t allow a vacuum, once it was official that the president has died, the next step was for the vice president to be sworn in.”

According to the Tanzanian constitution, Vice President Suluhu Hassan should assume the office of the President for the remaining time of that term.

Suluhu will become the first female President in the East African nations and the only female currently holding the position.

According to the information released by the state, Magufuli was admitted to the hospital on March 8th where he has been receiving health care until his demise.

Following the death of the President, Tundu Lissu a major critic of Magufuli’s government said “it’s now a new chapter for our country”.

“President Magufuli in the five years he was president caused havoc to our country,” Tundu said in an interview with Kenya’s KTN news.
