Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Somalia’s former president was on Sunday reelected as the country's new president following a long-overdue election.

Mohamud, has served as President of Somalia from 2012 to 2017.

He won the election in Mogadishu, despite authorities imposing a security lockdown to avert deadly rebel attacks. After three rounds of voting, he defeated his opponent by a margin of 214 to 110 votes.

“Candidate Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo garnered 110 votes while candidate Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud attained 214 votes; 3 votes were spoilt,” announced Speaker Madobe.

Only four candidates had advanced to the final round of voting. Apart from the elected, the other three were, Mohamed Adullahi Farmajo, Saed Abdullahi Deni and Hassan Ali Khaire.

After defeating two other candidates in the second round of voting, Mohamoud and Farmaajo advanced to the third round.

According to Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe, Speaker of the House of the People (Lower House), 327 of the 329 qualified MPs voted in the election.

Following the announcement of his victory, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Bashe Yusuf Ahmed swore Mohamoud in.

On his part, Mohamoud promised to reconcile the country and cooperate with all stakeholders at all levels of government in a brief speech.

He told the gathering, "Let us work together for the benefit of our people and country.”
