Hosts Portugal needed only a draw to qualify and appeared to have done so after Renato Sanches' opener was cancelled out by Dusan Tadic's equalizer. Mitrovic, who began the game on the bench, was introduced at halftime, but Portugal was aware of his threat and kept him mostly quiet. However, in the final seconds, the home team's concentration lapsed, and Mitrovic drew away from his marker to meet Tadic's deep ball and send a downward header into the back of the net. The goal elicited wild celebrations from the Serbian players and staff on the bench and on the field, while the Portuguese team stood in disbelief, the home crowd silenced.

Serbia finished first in Group A with 20 points, three more than Portugal, whose hopes of competing in Qatar next year are dependent on two rounds of play-offs in March. The defeat also brought an end to Portugal's unbroken winning streak in home World Cup qualifiers, which had lasted since October 2013.

The visitors appeared to be in for a long night after falling behind inside two minutes when Sanches finished confidently after Bernardo Silva had won possession.

Serbia, however, did not give up and deservedly equalized when Rui Patricio failed to keep out Tadic's shot, which crept over the line.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been known to score late goals for Manchester United this season, was quiet and came closest with a free-kick in the first half. Instead, Mitrovic provided the drama in the closing stages, as his header secured a famous victory for Serbia.

On other news, After 86 minutes, Morata tapped in after Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen tipped Dani Olmo's shot onto the crossbar to send Spain to Qatar. Luis Enrique's team only needed a point to win Group B, while Sweden needed to win to finish ahead of their opponents. As a result, Spain has qualified for the World Cup for the 12th time in a row. Sweden will have another chance to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar in the European play-offs in March.

Spain made the better start, with winger Pablo Sarabia curling a 20-yard effort narrowly wide in the opening exchanges. The visitors gradually gained control of the game and had several chances in the first half, with forward Emil Forsberg twice coming close to breaking the deadlock.

And, midway through the second period, Alexander Isak should have put Janne Andersson's team ahead, but the forward snatched at his chance after capitalizing on some lapsed defending. Spain held on after taking a late lead to continue their streak of appearing in every World Cup since 1974.
