Safaricom Bonga Points Will Now Expire After 3 Years

Safaricom has currently slated an expiry date for its loyalty program, Bonga points, in an attempt to promote redemption of the Bonga points which have a low user usage.

Safaricom Bonga Points Will Now Expire After 3 Years

According to the telecommunication company, all unredeemed Bonga points will now expire after three years.

“The accumulated Bonga points will be expiring after three years. We have noticed that they are usually dormant hence becoming a liability to us if unclaimed,” Safaricom said.

However, Safaricom stated that accumulated Bonga points acquired before December 31, 2019, would expire as of January 1, 2023.

“Effective January 1, 2023, all Bonga points older than three years will expire and will be unavailable for redemption,” said Safaricom in updated terms and conditions.

The action aims to release the underlying revenue, which as of March was worth Sh4.5 billion.

Bonga points is a loyalty program that enables Safaricom Prepay and Post-pay members to start accruing points right away after signing up for the program.

For every 10 Ksh spend on voice calls, SMS, or data, you receive 1 Bonga point. The more you use your Safaricom line, the more Bonga points you get as subscribers’ airtime top-ups result in the earning of Bonga points.

The introduction of the expiration date to Bonga points will promote redemption and release the underlying revenue, which as of March was Sh4.5 billion.

One must be enrolled in the program in order to use Bonga points. The Bonga points can later be exchanged for free internet, airtime, and bill payment.

All subscribers who have not used their Bonga points since December 31, 2019, have been urged to use their Bonga points quickly to prevent losing money when the expiration date comes around in January 1, 2023.
