The incident happened on Friday at around 2 am; the three are claimed to have pretended to be legitimate matatu drivers on the Mombasa Road route near Nyayo stadium.

According to the DCI’s statements, the three, Vincent Obongo, 38, Edward Kimani, 22, and Mohamed Idi Ndote, 27, were operating PSV vans when they were arrested by officers on patrol along Mombasa road immediately after a robbery incident.

"The robbery suspects were arrested by a contingent of officers on patrol at the Nyayo stadium roundabout at 2 am this morning, after they robbed passengers in a matatu of their mobile phones and other valuables," read the statement.

The DCI stated that the 'Usiku Sacco' matatus are non-roadworthy vehicles that operate without the necessary documentation.

“In a crime that is gaining currency in the city, the crew posing as genuine matatu operators sneak out PSV vehicles taken to garages for repairs and use them to illegally ferry passengers at night, before robbing them of their valuables,” noted the DCI.

At the same time, the DCI advised members of the public to keep an eye out for such vehicles, particularly those transporting people on routes other than those listed on the vehicle's body.

Meanwhile, detectives from DCI Langata have contacted those who were robbed to collect their mobile phones and other belongings and record a statement on the robbery.

The three are expected to face justice in court.
