The top sugar companies including Mumias, Western Kenya Sugar and Butali have been the source of good news after they increased the prices at which they buy sugarcane. A tonne of sugarcane previously cost Ksh.4,584 and will now cost Ksh.5,250. The rise in prices was to begin from March 20. 

The Mumias East MP, Peter Salasya is among the Western region polititians who welcomed the thought. He has directed for zoning of the new prices to help fight cartels in the sugar sector.

In 2021, Peter Munya, who was then the Agriculture Cabinet secretary had made an increase in price from Ksh.3,833 to Ksh.4, 112 per tonne. 

On an annual rate, 600,000 tonnes of sugar is produced.  The Agriculture sector stilll relies on importation to cover the demand which is at 900,000 tonnes. 300,000tonnes  is imported from COMESA states and is usually duty-free.
