On his part, Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya condemned the attack on the helicopter and urged law authorities to investigate the issue. He also pointed out that supporters of different politicians need to exercise tolerance as the country gears up for the August polls.

I condemn the attack on Azimio presidential candidate Rt Hon Raila Odinga by rowdy youths. I call upon security agents to swing into action and bring to book all those who participated in such a primitive act to stop such incidents from escalating during this campaign period,” Oparanya said.

After the incidence, the Azimio flagbearer went to the neighboring Elgeyo Marakwet when he was also met with a similar reception. His envoy was stoned by rowdy youths forcing him to stop his two-day campaigns in the rift valley area.

In a statement after the occurrences, the ODM party leader expressed his frustrations concerning the youths who attacked him.

In the statement also, Odinga said that youths were paid to cause violence in his political rally reminding leaders to try to avoid the 2007-2008 post-election violence

The threat came in the form of youth; mobilized armed and paid to cause mayhem and disorder, destroy property and even away lives in a bid t create political zones.” Read part of Odinga’s statement.

The attacks present a very dark reminder of what this country has witnessed before, particularly in the run up to the 1992 elections and in the 2007-2008 polls.”
