Fred Oganyo, a 37-year-old officer, allegedly shot himself while on duty on Wednesday night.

According to his immediate relatives and the authorities investigating the situation, the gunshot occurred about 9.30 p.m. last night.

When the unfortunate occurrence occurred, the officer's wife, Mercy Onyango, said the father of three had been assigned to guard duty at the prison's main entrance together with two colleagues.

Before the fateful incident, they had conversed, and she even requested money from the deceased to purchase food.

The wife also told that she could not understand why a husband was given a gun despite the drunken state that he was in.

Before his demise, the deceased had warned the kids before he departed that his belongings should be well taken care of if he died.

One of the children, the firstborn, sat for the KCPE exams in 2021.

"We didn't get into a fight. I'm not aware of any conflicts he might have had with anyone at his workplace," she stated

His body was transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, and preliminary results show the officer was stressed.

"He had unsolved family problems. We've been encouraging officers to talk to their friends and family about their concerns rather than ending their own lives," DCI stated.

"We can't say whether he was intoxicated or not, but the reality is that he was stressed," he said.

A comprehensive report will be available once investigators have completed their investigation, according to the county police chief.
