Uganda`s First Lady Janet Museveni Tasked to Clarify Sakaja`s Degree Woes

Uganda`s first lady Janet Museveni has now been called upon to clarify Nairobi Senator Johns Sakaja`s Degree woes that have been trending for some weeks now.

According to a lobby group in Kenya, they want President Yoweri`s wife Janet Museveni who is serving as the Minister for Education in Uganda to confirm whether senator Sakaja truly studied in Uganda.

The lobbying group petitioned the Ugandan Minister of Education to order Team University to provide Sakaja's admittance letter, information about his payment of tuition, and proof that he attended classes in the letter.

“Our client is certain that your office will treat this matter with the importance and the urgency that it requires to safeguard the image of Uganda as a country that has traditionally offered education to many students in the East African Community," the letter read.

The NGO asks Janet Museveni to inquire with the university about Sakaja's purported exclusion from the list of graduates who received a Bachelor's degree in Management on October 21, 2016, and request an explanation.

“The degree awarded to Sakaja is not honorary but an academic degree purportedly awarded after successful completion of coursework and other instructions for the award of the same,” the advocacy group said in the letter dated June 14.

“From [the] available immigration services information in Kenya, Sakaja has only traveled to Uganda once, which was on October 17, 2014, and the visit was for parliamentary business, not for educational purposes,” Youth Advocacy Africa stated.

According to Sakaja, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Management from the Kampala-based university in October 2016.

The Senator intends to run for Nairobi governor in the general election on August 9, however, the IEBC mandates that candidates for the position possess at least a Bachelor's degree.

Four petitions alleging that Sakaja may have obtained his academic papers fraudulently were submitted, which is when Sakaja's problems began. The DCI was informed by the University of Nairobi that Sakaja had not yet received his Actuarial Science degree, despite the allegations that he is a graduate.

On Tuesday 14th  Sakaja`s Degree woes took a new twist. This is after the University Edited its website three times a day further deleting senator Sakaja's name from the list of UON alumni.

UoN edited the details leaving just the fact that the senator had joined the institution from 2013 to 2016.

John Orindi, the director of UoN Communication, responded to media inquiries and confirmed that Sakaja had been admitted to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science in 2003 but had not completed his four-year degree.

In contrast to what the Senator had first claimed in prior interviews, he cited a previous declaration made by the university that stated that the Senator did not graduate in 2007 because his transcripts were missing.

"It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from the first year up to the fourth year, but is yet to graduate.

"The university earlier issued a statement and was clear that the person in question did not complete his studies," Orindi concluded.
