On Tuesday Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacist and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has issued a warning that there are no more spaces left within the ICU across the country.
“The rising numbers of infections have not spared healthcare workers. 10 doctors are currently admitted,” said Secretary-General Chibanzi Mwachonda.
According to Secretary-General Mwachonda, with the doctors admitted in hospitals, the country needs more health workers to fight the pandemic.
"The acute shortage of doctors is detrimental to the health sector. We urge the Ministry of Health and National Treasury to fast-track the contract renewal process of the 156 hired to work in isolation and treatment centers across Kenya, County governments should address grievances at the workplace to avoid industrial unrest and provision of PPEs," he said.
Mwachonda urged Kenyans to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols in order to save the health workers.
The move comes after the increase in the positivity rate of Covid-19 cases in the country in the recent past. The Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the country was under attack by the third wave which more severe as compared to the other waves.
On Monday, March 22nd, the country recorded 1130 positive cases in a sample size of 5,119 tested within 24 hours.
