Geoffrey Waswa Appointed As the New Kenya Power Managing Director

Kenyans on Twitter are on the look as Kenya Power has named a new acting managing director, Geoffrey Waswa Muli, to replace Rosemary Oduor, who has held the position since August 2021.

Muli will take over from Oduor immediately after she commences her leave, according to a statement issued by the firm on Tuesday.

Mr. Muli is an insider who was the acting general manager in charge of regional coordination at the troubled state-owned electricity distributor prior to his appointment.

“Kenya Power has appointed Eng Geoffrey Waswa Muli as acting managing director with effect from 17th May 2022 in place of Eng Rosemary Oduor, who was serving in an acting capacity,” the statement read.

The new CEO of KPLC holds a master's degree in business administration as well as a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

Rosemary Oduor took over from Bernard Ngugi, who also resigned last year in shock changes at the firm.

She was a Kenya Power employee since 1991, was the company's General Manager in charge of Commercial Services and Sales.

Her appointment came after President Uhuru Kenyatta formed a task force to review Kenya Power's purchase agreements.

Kenya Power announced plans to lay off 2,000 employees as part of a KSh 5.3 billion retirement plan.  The company stated that the voluntary employee separation exercise (VES), which will take place in three phases until 2023, will save it KSh 1.54 billion annually when it is completed in June next year.

The near-monopoly company revealed in the plan that it would reduce its workforce by 20% by letting go of 1,962 aging employees and replacing them with 830 younger and more energetic ones.

The VES would reduce KPLC's staff to 8,711 from 9,843 in January. The retrenchment will affect artisans (571), technicians (180), engineers (155), clerks (151), drivers (138), craftsmen (131), commercial service officers (122), and meter readers (110).
