Form Four Student Shot Dead By Stray Bullet In Nakuru

A Form Four student was shot dead by police in Nakuru County after she was struck by a stray bullet while police were chasing down suspected thieves on Sunday.

The family of Whitney Atieno, 19, is seeking justice following the unfortunate incident.

According to sources, Atieno had gone to a salon in Lake View Estate, Nakuru Town East, to get her hair plaited in preparation for school on Monday.

Atieno and her friend Ruth Waithera were at the salon when they heard a commotion and went outside to see.

Local cops were pursuing the notorious gang 'Confirm,' which is well-known in the area when one cop fired a gunshot that wounded Waithera in the arm and pierced through to hit Atieno in the chest.

The police ordered the driver to leave when they realized the risk posed by their colleague's conduct, but the now-enraged crowd forced them to bring the two to the hospital.

"The commanding officer asked the families to fuel the vehicle so they could take the girls to the hospital. The crowd, however, forced them to rush the girls to hospital with the escort of a few residents," said a witness speaking to the Nation.

They were taken to the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, where Atieno succumbed to the injuries.

Atieno's younger sister recounted hearing gunshots in their home on the fateful day. As she approached the roadside to investigate what had happened, she noticed her sister bleeding heavily on the ground.

"She was bleeding. I pleaded with the police to take her to the hospital, but they asked me to fuel the vehicle or look for a motorcycle or a taxi," she said.

"In the ward, my sister kept assuring me that she would be fine. I remember her last words so vividly. She told me to tell my other siblings that she loves them."

The event has triggered protests in Nakuru, with Atieno's mother, Rebecca Bulimo, blaming the Bondeni station commander, who was in charge of the operation, for her daughter's murder.

The acting police commander for Nakuru East Sub-County, Wilson Nduati, has expressed his condolences to Atieno's family, claiming that the police had to fire the shot to scare away youngsters who had attacked them while following the gang.

Nduati promised that if the officer is proven to have broken the law, suitable action would be taken against him.
