It's unclear why Josphat Kiirinya Ndegwa, an officer assigned to the Athi River Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus, chose to commit suicide.

“It was alleged that someone had hanged himself on a tree within the police perimeter. Police officers led by Roy Mwaura arrived at the area and discovered the deceased hanging from a tree," according to the police report.

"Scene of crime personnel photographed the scene, and the body was transferred to Machakos Referral Hospital for autopsy," the report stated.

The incident occurs just hours after another Garissa County officer resigned from the force due to financial difficulties.

Alex Mulama of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) resigned, claiming that he was doing a lot of work but not getting paid well.

He forwarded the letter to DCI Director George Kinoti and Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai.

"Sir, I hereby provide notice that effective March 10, 2022, I will be resigning from the Kenya National Police Service (Directorate of Criminal Investigations). I've come to this choice because of financial limits, health issues, and job-related stress," the letter stated in part.

Mulama also stated that he has worked diligently since joining the military nine years ago, and thanked his superiors for allowing him to serve the country as a police officer.

Mulama was assigned to the North-Eastern region at the time of his resignation.
