Three suspected criminals are being sought by police in Juja, Kiambu County, for reportedly robbing and killing a university student in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

At around 2 a.m., the hoodlums allegedly accosted Joel Juma, a 23-year-old fourth-year Industrial Chemistry student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), while he and his girlfriend were allegedly going to collect test revision materials from a colleague who lived nearby.

The girlfriend had gone to visit his lover last evening at around 6pm and found him studying for his examinations. She prepared a meal that they shared together before they retired to bed,” read a statement by the Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI).

However, Juma later woke up and embarked on his books but at 2am, he asked his girlfriend to escort him to where a classmate lived a few blocks away, to get some reference material that he needed before morning.” The statement added.

The gang of three, on the other hand, would attack the couple, with two of them punching the dead before stabbing him twice in the chest and seizing his phone and other possessions.

The surviving goon would concentrate his efforts on the lady, a Mt. Kenya University law student.

He would, however, spare her when he saw she was not carrying anything significant with her at the moment. The trio would flee under the cover of darkness shortly after.

The uproar drew the attention of neighboring security officers, who came on the scene and rushed Juma and the clearly terrified lady to a nearby dispensary, according to the DCI. Juma, on the other hand, was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to the DCI, the gang could be the remnants of a broader criminal organization that terrorized inhabitants of Kayole and Dandora.

Due to heightened activity by law enforcement agencies in the two estates, the gang is believed to have departed the abovementioned places and sought refuge in Gachororo, Juja.

Consequently, a major undercover operation, led by the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) as well as the Special Service Unit (SSU), has been launched in the area to completely annihilate the gang,” the DCI added.
