Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Mutura Detained
On Wednesday, April 20, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, Benson Mutura was picked up from his City Hall office and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road for questioning.

Although the reason for his arrest has not been made public, DCI officers are said to have raided his office and apprehended him.
Minutes later, photos of him in handcuffs surfaced on the internet.

Speaking to a media house in Kenya, moments before his arrest, Mutura confirmed that he would issue a press statement later before disconnecting the call.
Mutura described the arrest to members of the press as a political witchhunt. He claimed that he is being targeted because he has endorsed Deputy President William Ruto's presidential bid.
Mutura, who had previously stated that he would not run for political office, switched allegiances from the Jubilee party to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in April 2022.
He was received by Deputy President William Ruto at his official residence in Karen, where he assured him that he would work for the party.
"The leaders of Nairobi County led by Speaker Benson Mutura have officially declared that the Hustler Nation is their home and that Kenya Kwanza is the way to a better country. Uchumi Kwanza,” DP Ruto stated.
Mutura took over as speaker after Beatrice Elachi announced her resignation following protracted squabbles with County Assembly members.
