The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched a probe into the alleged embezzlement of funds in the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Moi University.

EACC notes that the crime is being facilitated by an alleged bloated payroll that is dominated by ghost workers.

Already, the anti-graft body has written to the university’s VC Prof Isaac Kosgey seeking information on its payroll and a list of its workers.

In a letter dated September 7, 2021, EACC North Rift regional head J. Baithalu asked the Kesses-based University boss to supply them with documents that will facilitate their investigations.

“The commission is infirmed that the university has a bloated payroll with most of its employees as ghost workers,” noted EACC part of the letter.

“To facilitate the investigation, the commission requests you to provide the original documents and information supporting employment of all teaching and non-teaching staff as from 1st July 2018 to date,” added the commission.

EACC also wants the VC to provide original documents supporting the payments of salaries/allowances for all staff from July 2018 alongside an approved budget from the Ministry of Education.

The current VC Prof Kosgey officially took over the management of Moi University in March 2018, replacing Prof Kiprono Mibey.

His appointment was clouded in controversies after local leaders opposed ealier naming of Prof Laban Ayiro as the head of the institution.

The Ministry of Education later bowed down to pressure and appointed Prof Kosgey as a substantive VC.
