Maize Flour Prices to be Reduced by Ksh.2 - Says CS Munya

Munya stated that the government will issue a directive on Thursday  30th June suspending the levies that will lower the price of flour.

"I have suspended all levies on imports for Maize and Animal feed products effective 1st July 2022. This initiative is aimed at lowering the cost of maize flour and animal feed in the country for the next 90 days before the next harvest". CS Munya.

The move is modest, according to the United Grain Millers Association (UGMA), an umbrella body for both small and large-scale millers, and will have little influence on consumers.

"The move is so insignificant we need a serious government intervention on making the maize available to reduce significantly on the cost of flour," said UGMA chairman Ken Nyaga as quoted by Business Daily.

Mr. Nyaga also encouraged the government to commence direct talks with other nations in order to import maize, noting that they are currently Kenya's source markets.

Currently, a 2kg packet of maize flour is retailing at 213 considering the type of the brand. This means that if the levie is lifted a 2kg maize flour will retail at Ksh. 211.
