Kenyatta University's Disputed Land To Be Returned To The University

Speaking during the 52nd Graduation Ceremony of Kenyatta University (KU) on Friday, Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua announced that the disputed land will be completely reverted to the university.

DP Gachagua said that only a little portion of the land will be divided up to resolve Kamae squatters' claims to ownership of portion of the land.

The DP with regard to the aforementioned land, reiterated his severe criticism of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, claiming that the institution would have lost its prized land to "grabbers" if the Kenya Kwanza team had lost the election.

Gachagua was alluding to a dispute between the previous administration and KU Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina that led to the latter's ouster after the latter objected to the government's plan to give part of the university's land to the World Health Organization (WHO)

WHO wanted the land in order to build a logistics hub and a Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Prof Wainanina opposed the request making the former president to read them the Riot Act, threatening them with sanctions and eventually sending them home with him as he left office.

Prof. Wainaina was then suspended, fired, and later on reinstated as KU Vice Chancellor.

The DP promised that the government would call a meeting in January of the next year with representatives from the Ministries of Lands and Education as well as Kamae squatters in order to reach an agreement on how to resolve the land dispute.
