Kenyan Doctors To Stage Strike From January 2023

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have warned that they will be going on a strike for 30 days as from January 2023.

Kenyan Doctors To Stage Strike From January 2023

The strike warning is in response to what they claim is the government's inability to uphold their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

KMPDU's Secretary General, Dr. Davji Atellah, stated in a news conference on Monday that the CBA that was signed with the County and National governments in 2017 has since been forgotten.

In contrast, contrary to what was agreed upon in the CBA, the government has not promoted physicians, hired new physicians, or provided medical equipment needed by physicians.

“We see extreme shortage of doctors, there are no specialists. We have over 5000 doctors who have not been employed,” KMPDU said.

As a result, the doctors declared that if their issues are not resolved right away, they will lay down their tools in January 2023.

“We have written letters trying to have actions from National and County governments. By the time we have given notice of intend of industrial action, we have exhausted all the available avenues. An agreement that has been signed by the state has to be honoured,” they said.

The KMPDU now seeks the creation of a Health Service Commission within a hundred days and the permanent and pensionable employment of physicians under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) scheme.
